How to Replace an replacement audi car key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins, and they have different functions but the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed, repairer i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. But i am afraid I might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know both the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. The good thing is that they are very affordable and readily available particularly if you're looking at a Bosch model, which is what we have. Alternatively, GM's version of this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous issues with your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi a3 replacement key since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine of the car is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends signals via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to control fuel and boost, and also timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This part is common across the audi keys 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find some good ones in wrecking yards.
