How to Repair Bifold Door Top Roller Guide

If your bifold door repair bracket door is squeaking it's likely they require some maintenance. They may need to be cleaned, lubricated or adjusted. The issue could be caused by an unfastened screw on the top pivot or the top roller guide.

Remove the Door

Installing a set of internal bifold doors could seem like a complex and challenging project, but it's actually quite easy for DIYers with a little experience. The frame's placement isn't a major issue but the trick is getting the doors to fold and close quickly and precisely. Bifold doors are a complex piece of machinery and, as such they may require some 'tuning up' to ensure that they function properly. It could be as easy as tightening a screw or as complex as taking out the door and replacing the pivot pin or roller.

It is usually possible to fix these issues by making a few simple adjustments, without having to take out the doors. You might notice that your bifold doors are sagging or scraping the floor, or slipping off track. The solution to these issues isn't difficult. With three simple steps, your bifold doors should be back in the blink of an eye.

One of the most common problems that internal bifold doors face is that they are sliding out of alignment. This can be due to loose screws, holes on the anchor/pivots or an unaligned bifold door. Most times this can be fixed by making a few minor adjustments. If, however, your door doesn't move at all, you may have to replace it.

To take the door off, you'll need an screwdriver and perhaps two pliers (to help loosen any pins on the pivot that are stuck). The screwdriver will be used to release any locking levers that are on the bottom bracket of the pivot and the pliers let you wiggle the pin and take it off.

When the top roller has become loose, you should be able to lift the door and then swivel it downward and allow you to pull it off of its pivot brackets and track. It's usually quite simple, but be careful not to let the door crash against the door frame. Then, you can sand down the edge of the door to make it smooth. Then paint or refinish the door if necessary.

Take off the Roller Guide

This spring-loaded roller guides the mount on the top of a bifolding door to ensure smooth operation. It is designed to be used with Kenna frames and will fit doors that are 1 to 1-3/8 inches thick. It is constructed of nylon, steel and plastic components. It will replace a damaged guide.

Take out any screws that are holding the roller guide in place by using a screwdriver. Make use of your hands to gently remove it from the frame. It could require some effort to lift the door, so ask a friend to help you.

Once the guide you used to guide your child is removed, carefully cut the remaining finish around the foot of the new guide using the help of a razor blade to separate it from the rod blank. This will make it easier to remove and protect the new guide foot. Be cautious while doing this because the foot is extremely sharp and can cut or nick your fingers.

You may have to use a bit of force to get the guide off, but be careful not to chip or break the foot. After you've separated the guide from the rod blank, make sure to take out all of the epoxy and threads that remain in the place the guide was attached. This will help prevent any future problems with the guide.

After you have removed the previous guide, test your replacement by placing it in its permanent location. Make a few turns with masking tape or guide tubing to secure it in its place. This will let you double check the guide spacing and alignment to make sure that everything is set up correctly. This step is crucial to avoid any issues in the future regardless of whether you are using the CRB Spine Finder and Deflection System or eyeball it.

The final step is to replace the door. If the guide is in the correct position and functioning just as it should, you're able to proceed. Be aware that any screws or pins that you removed or loosened should be replaced and tightened correctly when you're done.

Take the Bottom Pivot off.

Bifold doors are a stunning feature for any home, but sometimes they need a little adjustment or tweaking to stay in good shape. Some issues can be addressed by keeping the doors in place. Others will require the doors be removed. This guide will show you how to remove the bifold internal door pins, rollers and pivots.

Gathering your tools is the first step. Putting everything together ahead of time will save you some frustration later during the construction. You'll need a screwdriver pliers and perhaps a wrench. A basic set of tools can be bought at a reasonable price at your local hardware store. Keep some wood glue in your kit. This can be very useful if you have to glue any rollers back into the correct position.

Once you've got your tools, begin by opening the bifold doors, and then loosening the top track bracket with your screwdriver. Once this is loose the door should be capable of sliding off the top track completely. It could take a little few jigglings but it should pop right off the track.

The pivot on the bottom of the frame needs to be removed. Close all doors to the interior before you begin. This will make it easier to do rather than working inside. If the bottom track still appears to be in good condition, you can simply lift the door and take off the track.

If the track is damaged, then you'll need to replace it. Hardware stores offer replacement tracks for bifold doors as well as swinging closet doors. If the track is badly damaged, you may need to replace it completely.

You'll need to test your doors for proper function. Verify that the doors be moved into and out of their positions smoothly. Also, you should ensure that the edges of the door are parallel to the frame when closed. If they're not, you'll need to readjust the top pivot bracket and tighten or loosen the bottom setscrew until the edge of the door lines up perfectly with the frame.

Replace the Roller

If they are installed properly they can be used to cover pantries, laundry nooks and closets. They are made up of two panels that are hinged and open using a track that sits in the top of the frame. Over time the roller guides may wear out and cause the doors to slide. Replacing the guide roller takes only a few minutes and a few basic tools.

The first step is to take the guide roller from the door panel. The pivot bolt at the bottom must be removed, and the screw that holds the guide to the top of the door panel must be loosened. After removing the guide, lift the panel from the track. Next, loosen the nut that secures the top pivot bolt and employ the wrench to remove it from the hole in the top header of the door frame.

A top nylon replacement guide that has a 7/8 inch diameter wheel and a base made of steel is available from Stanley, Cox or Acme. It can be mounted on the top of the bifold door, which is 1 inch to 1-3/8 inches in thickness and is spring loaded to self-adjust the upper track for smooth sliding.

A bifold door may also scratch against the floor when it opens and closes. This is often the result of adding carpet or other flooring materials that require the doors to be elevated to allow for clearance. In addition to a new top roller guide, you will require a small bottle of Elmer's wood glue which is sold in the big box stores, as well as a squeeze clamp.
