We asked Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect, and the founder of LS Projects - for her suggestions on how to pick the right one. We looked at the storage capacity, layout, and energy efficiency, among other features.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name of the series suggests that the GE Profile series is aimed at those who wish to incorporate cutting-edge technology into their kitchens. This fridge has them all including a Keurig K cup coffee maker inside the door, to a clever dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. The refrigerator is expensive and I was expecting better.

This refrigerator is a good option, despite the slight blip. It boasts a spacious freezer compartment, which is uncommon in counter-depth French door refrigerators. Additionally, it holds a good amount of frozen food compared to similar models.

The fridge comes with 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment has 18.5 cubic feet, which is typical for a fridge with a French door at this price. It has a decent sized freezer in the left side. But, it's not the largest one I've seen.

You can adjust the shelves in each compartment to create a customized storage layout for the items you need to store. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS also looks attractive. Its LED lighting is a nice touch and the storage bins have an additional shelf that folds up beneath itself to allow you to store large items. The drawers include temperature controls that let you set them to Meat, Beverage, or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, although I found their plastic textured coatings a bit difficult on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator is equipped with a all the features you'd expect from a refrigerator at this price, including Wi-Fi and app support via GE's SmartHQ software. The app, available for iOS and Android devices allows you to control your refrigerator from anywhere in the world, and has a ton of customization options. It also alerts you when doors are left open, when your fridge or freezer needs to be defrosted and when it's time to change the filter.

It would be nice if GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill which is an option that is available in other GE fridges that allow you to set the number of cups of water you'd like to pour out simultaneously. It also has a countdown on the fridge's display to display how much water you have left, but it's not as useful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is a stunning piece of equipment. It's designed to appear like it's a seamless component of your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment which keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer, and dual compressors to preserve food. The Ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient and produces the shape of a pyramid using only water. This refrigerator is the ideal choice for single household or kitchenettes that want an integrated look and top of the line food preservation.

This fridge was rated as the best in our Refrigerators Test due to a variety of reasons. The temperature of the freezer remained stable at just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, never moving by more than a fraction a degree--this is key in preventing freezer burn. The fridge's fridge section also performed well, reaching the desired temperature for initial set within a matter of hours and keeping that temperature steady throughout the course of our testing.

Bosch is known for its premium appliances which is why it's no surprise that this counter depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance, with the option of connecting to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app lets you monitor and manage your fridge remotely using your smartphone or tablet. The refrigerator is costly however, it offers excellent features and capabilities at a reasonable price.

While the fridge is a fantastic piece of equipment, it's important to know the limitations. It has a small space for shelves, so you may need to be creative when it comes to storing large items. Also, the shelves are not impervious to sprills and could be damaged or stained by sharp objects. It's easy to remove the refrigerator trays however, you must clean them frequently to prevent mold growth.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth fridge is a great choice for those who require lots of space within the space of a compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the refrigerator has an ordinary French-door design with gallon-sized door bins at each door as well as two rows of spill-capture shelves, and a set of crisper drawers. The top shelf to the right can be folded built in french door fridge freezer order to create more space for tall items. You'll also find a full width drawer for deli items and an internal water dispenser.

The refrigerator comes with an ice maker, making it easy to transfer the frozen ice as needed. The freezer also has thoughtful design features, such as sliding drawers that help you sort your things. It also comes with a large bin that holds plenty of frozen food items as well as an ice storage bin.

Smart InstaView panel is another awesome feature of the refrigerator. It allows you to manage the refrigerator's temperature and lighting using your smartphone. It's a good method of monitoring and managing your refrigerator, particularly if you're away from home.

Although the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it does not necessarily improve the overall performance of the refrigerator. In fact it took a bit longer to defrost and chill foods in this refrigerator than some of the others we tried. This is likely due to its bigger capacity.

The doors are another problem with this fridge. They have handles that are sunken at the front, which allows shorter people to easily pull them open from the bottom, but they're not easy for taller people to guide closed without slamming the doors. It would have been more effective if they had handles mounted on the front.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is an excellent option for those looking to blend the look of a French door refrigerator with more efficient design. Its capacity is above average for a counter-depth model, and it cools evenly and has a good layout. It's also a bit cheaper than the best counter depth refrigerators that have an ice maker, making it an attractive option.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good choice if you want a non plumbed french door fridge-door refrigerator that doesn't cost a lot of budget. It's a simple fridge which may not be as attractive like some of its competitors however it has enough features to make a good option. Its most important characteristic is the adjustable temperature drawer which helps keep food items like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also has a large water dispenser and a decent ice machine that works fast.

The "Chill Drawer", which is situated over the two crisper bins, is another excellent feature. This drawer allows you to redirect a portion of your fridge's cooling power to this area so that you can keep food items that require special attention. This feature can be adjusted using a slider on the outside of the drawer. You can also adjust the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've noticed that the generic settings work better than the specific ones.

In my tests, the temperatures of the refrigerator were fairly constant across the different areas of the refrigerator. The temperatures in the middle, top and bottom of the refrigerator did not differ much from 38 degrees. This is a pretty good performance, but it doesn't quite be among the top in our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be connected with a smart thermostat to get more accurate readings on the internal temperature of your fridge.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's outside is made of stainless steel with a grey body that has a "smudge-proof" finish. It repels fingerprints and streaks better than other stainless steel finishes I've tested.
