Overview

Applications to Birmingham Newman hit a record high for admission last September, the same month as the institution changed its name to Birmingham Newman University. Bolting to its title the name of the city in which the university sits is designed to heighten awareness of its location to those considering it from outside the West Midlands. Currently five in every six students come from the West Midlands, attracted by its reputation for offering something a little different to the degree-factory norm. The university sums up this difference as 'a traditional ethos. A modern approach. A sense of belonging'.  The university promises an interactive learning experience rather than the traditional one of large lectures and note-taking. With around 2,000 undergraduates, Newman provides a more personal university experience. Its scores in the National Student Survey are consistently some of the highest in the country. Its student intake is among the most diverse, with half of the students drawn from ethnic minorities and nearly 70% the first in their immediate family to go to university. The campus is located in a quiet residential area on the southwestern edge of Birmingham, overlooking the Worcestershire countryside.

Paying the bills

Newman's support for its students is of the academic and 다파벳카지노 pastoral variety - and less the financial. It elects not to provide bursary or scholarship support, although there is a hardship fund that makes awards of up to £1,750 for students in extreme need. Supermarket and travel vouchers are also offered to those who can provide evidence of financial hardship, and the university meets the cost of dyslexia screening and diagnosis for all students who need it. There are four student halls of residence offering 276 places between them; prices rose by between 4.76% and 6.45% for the coming year. The cheapest rooms with shared bathrooms in the university's original halls cost £4,840 for a 44-week contract, while a 51-week tenancy in a smart new flat within Cofton Hall costs £10,455.

What's new?

Newman's initial teacher education provision was graded 'good' in all areas - overall effectiveness, quality of education and training, and leadership and management - by Ofsted in May. The award covered both primary and secondary school teacher training. Inspectors said of the secondary provision: 'The university has designed a course that models and teaches high ambition, inclusive practice and secure subject knowledge.' As a former Catholic teacher training college, this training still makes up a significant proportion of Newman's degree offering. Elsewhere, the expansion of the new school of nursing and allied health continues apace. Only opened last September for students taking degrees in adult nursing, mental health nursing and physiotherapy, Newman is adding degrees in paramedic science, occupational therapy and sports therapy this month and equipping the new school with paramedic science labs, occupational therapy labs and a physiotherapy suite for the additional intake of students. The university is at the consultancy stage for a wider redevelopment of the campus planned for completion by 2030.

Admissions, teaching and student support

Newman has partnered with six local schools and sixth-form colleges to give pupils the confidence to apply to university. It also supports the parents of first-generation students by explaining the process of applying to and going to university. This says everything about the diversity of the intake here, which is one of the most inclusive of any university in the UK. The university achieves this without a formal contextual admissions policy; the reality is that its holistic and individual approach to admissions means that offers for most of its courses are eminently attainable for all students. Typically, entrants need 96 to 112 Ucas tariff points (often with a minimum of CC up to BBC at A-level) for admissions to honours degree courses, dropping to 48 points (or DD at A-level) for four-year courses with a foundation year. With barely 2,000 undergraduates, Newman prides itself on having a supportive atmosphere. Mental health and wellbeing advisers offer one-to-one appointments in person or remotely, and run workshops, events and campaigns throughout the year. They can advise on financial concerns and debt management, housing, childcare, alcohol and drug misuse, sexual health and pregnancy, sexual harassment, domestic violence and forced marriage. This comes in addition to offering in-depth and crisis support when needed. The university's HEADstart and HEADsup+ pre-enrolment in-person and online courses help new students with the transition from school to university.
